Established in 1996, Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute is a renowned tertiary eye hospital with its flagship branch in Khardah. For over 28 years, the institute has remained committed to serving the community with compassion, excellence, and dedication.
The institute has fostered strategic partnerships with leading eye institutions worldwide, enhancing our capabilities to deliver cost-effective, quality eye care. It has expanded the reach in 2019 by establishing a state-of-the-art eye care hospital at Newtown.
Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute’s programs include a cataract training program, and we pride ourselves on our expertise in ophthalmic education. As a result, we have achieved excellence in ophthalmology, propelling India into international prominence.
We are proud members of Vision 2020 and ICC-Kolkata (Indian Chamber of Commerce), solidifying our position as a leader in ophthalmology.
Beyond our hospital facilities, we operate 16 Vision Centres across North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah, and Kolkata. Each centre covers over 50,000 people and functions 3-4 days a week. We screen almost 5,000 patients monthly through these centres and camps.

Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute working in Association with the Government:
The Institution works in close association with Government institutions, works with NPCBVI Barasat, NPCBVIBasirhat, and Kolkata Municipal Corporation. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed at the Government level to provide comprehensive eye care service at the community level.

Dr. Shivnath Das, a Gold Medalist in Ophthalmology, is the founder of Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute, a prestigious institution renowned for its excellence in eye care. A pioneer in microsurgery and intraocular implantation in East India, Dr. Das has revolutionized the field of ophthalmology. With extensive experience in phacoemulsification, Dr. Das has trained numerous surgeons at the institute. He has trained the surgeons at this centre, has specialties in Cataract and Comprehensive Ophthalmology, Corneal and External Eye Disease, Glaucoma, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Oculoplastic and Aesthetic Eye plastic, Pediatric, Refractive Surgery, Ocular Inflammation and Immunology and Vitreo-Retina have been established to provide a full range of eye treatment from comprehensive to tertiary levels for the entire spectrum of eye conditions.
Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Shivnath Das, Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute was founded in Khardah in 1996. Since its inception, the institute has evolved into a premier eye care destination, offering a wide spectrum of services from basic to tertiary levels.
Advancing Eye Care Excellence: Newtown Branch
Building on its success, Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute expanded its reach by establishing a state-of-the-art, tertiary-level eye care hospital at Newtown in 2019. Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute is spearheaded by Dr. Shibashis Das (Director), a visionary philanthropic leader and gold medalist. Renowned for his expertise in advanced cataract surgery, refractive error correction (LASIK), neuro-ophthalmology and medical retina, Dr. Das guides the institute in it’s mission to make quality eye care accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic background. Under his leadership, Sankara Jyoti Institute embodies the institute’s vision of bringing light to every life.
